Meet the Band
Musical Director:
Miles Davison

Miles started playing the Tenor Horn at the age of eleven
with the Lanner and District Silver Band in Cornwall. He moved to Grimsby in
1979 and played Euphonium and Flugel in a local band before being offered the
Solo Horn position with the Brodsworth Colliery Band.
In 1988 he was appointed Principal Horn with the Desford
Colliery Band, the newly crowned national champions. With Desford he realised
several ambitions: touring with the band to Moscow, the USA and extensively in
Europe, winning four national titles in a row as well making many recordings
and broadcasts where he has also featured as a soloist. Miles was also a member
of the Desford quartet, winning two open titles in succession.
In 1992 Miles and Ian Porterhouse were invited to train the St Kilda Band in New
Zealand for their National Championships, Not only did St Kilda became National
Champions by eight clear points but they also won a string of smaller ensemble
victories and the National Quartet title. In the weeks leading up to the
competition Miles also featured as a soloist on New Zealand national Radio.
Since leaving the Desford band Miles has played with Stocksbridge Band, James
Shephard Versatile Brass, Black Dyke Band, Dodworth Band, Yorkshire Imps,
Carlton Main Frickley, EYMS and Hatfield Colliery where he was also Bandmaster
and assistant conductor.
As a conductor Miles has worked with Barrow Concert, Aunt
Bessies Brass, EYMS and Stocksbridge Band and was appointed as Musical Director
of South Milford Brass in February 2010.
We hope Miles enjoys a long and successful association with
the band
